UGLY

YIRI ARTS' annual curatorial exhibition, UGLY, features the works of eight artists from Taiwan and abroad that delve into the various dimensions of ugliness in contemporary times and the experiences shared by the present-day youth. Unlike the conventional dichotomy between beauty and ugliness, this exhibition aims to explore the diverse aesthetic textures and innovative artistic expressions that typify the post-1980s generation. The artists invite the viewers to join in a collective contemplation of contemporary ugliness, offering a nuanced and sophisticated approach to the concept.

The works on display offer a daring and visceral visual experience, with distorted figures serving as a starting point. They transmit a sense of unease and danger, suggesting a world in flux and on the brink of chaos. Amidst this turbulence, a playful and rebellious spirit emerges, challenging established norms and envisioning new possibilities for ugliness. The works come together to express a muted call for resistance and opposition to power, along with a celebration of the beauty that can be found in ugliness.
