Evi Pangestu was born in 1992 in Jakarta, Indonesia, and is currently based in London, UK. She earned her Master's degree in Painting from the Royal College of Art in London in 2019, following her Bachelor's degree in Fine Art from the Birmingham School of Art in 2017. Evi Pangestu's work experiments with grids, structures, and materials, exploring the tension between order and interruption. The equitable quality of the square is her fundamental measure of control, which she tests through cycles of deconstruction and restoration. She uses colour to highlight moments of tension, repair, and realignment. Evi explores how people navigate systems of power and compromise, reflecting on how structures are challenged and adapted both personally and within social contexts.
Her recognitions and honors include being selected as a finalist for the UOB Painting of the Year (2021) and featured in Prestige Indonesia's 40 Under 40 (2022). She has held several solo exhibitions, including Structure Control (2025) at THEO Gallery in Seoul, Overthinking Squares (2025) at YIRI ARTS in Taipei, To Be Square With (2023) at Kala Karya Gallery in Jakarta, and Codes of Compromise (2022) at D Gallerie in Jakarta. Her work has also been featured in group exhibitions internationally, such as The Metamorphosis (2024) at YIRI ARTS in Taipei, ARTJOG Motif: Lamaran (2023) at Jogja National Museum in Yogyakarta, Winter Exhibition (2020) at the Royal Academy of Arts in London, and the Graduate Show (2019) at the Royal College of Art in London.
