Laura Limbourg was born in Belgium in 1996. She graduated from Academy of Fine Arts in Prague having majored in painting. The figures in Laura's paintings were inspired by her six-month travels in Southeast Asia. The paintings show exotic jungle plants, ancient Asian religions and statues, and harried persecuted sex workers on busy city streets. The naked female bodies in the paintings refuse to conform to stereotypical gender views. She portrays women as confident and accompanied by ferocious spirit animals such as tigers and fearsome floating heads such as that of the Medusa. In these fantastical paintings, the women are still able to enjoy themselves. Her style is uniquely recognizable and she both explores yet subvert the issues she addresses through her paintings. Her work may be wild, explicit, and provocative but it is also candid in a translucent way that is anything but harmonious.
