Wang Yu-Song:Being in Both Formosa

4 - 26 July 2020 YIRI ARTS

The incident occurred in the week following 2015, after the earthquake had ended. As I walked past the collapsed building, which was still leaning and had not been demolished, rescue workers were searching for victims who had not yet left the building. The Hualien government had brought in many cranes to support the remaining structure, and large headlights around the area made everything exceptionally bright. However, when looking inside the building, the shadows appeared even darker, causing me to imagine that there were victims trapped in every dark corner.

As I walked away from the building, the lights gradually returned to the usual streetlights. I slowly began to realize that there were cracks of various sizes on the asphalt road. When I focused my attention on these cracks, I noticed that the entire road was cracked, and some parts had already split in half. The cracks produced the same feeling of darkness, making me wonder what lay beneath and what might be lurking there.

When thinking about these cracks from a rational and scientific perspective, I understood that beneath the asphalt was soil, and below that was the earth's crust... Beyond the center of the earth was the other side of the world. While Hualien was experiencing such a severe plate shift, what was the scenery like on the other side? As I continued to stare at the cracks, an incredible thought suddenly occurred to me. I was walking in the dark, and was there a group of people walking towards me, but they were walking in reverse during the day? This idea shocked me even more, just like Columbus traveling west and returning to the starting point. The world is indeed round, and there are people living right under my feet. That is a synchronous world, and it wasn't until now that I fully realized this fact from my own experience. That place is the farthest distance on Earth.
