Kyoko Shindo:Duality

15 July - 5 August 2023 YIRI ARTS

Kyoko Shindo's practices draw inspiration from everyday life experiences and undergo a process of introspection. Similar to the perpetual cycle of life, where organisms flourish and propagate through the symbiotic relationship between microorganisms and nutrients in the soil, eventually returning to the earth to foster new life, Shindo strives to reshape her personal narratives into fresh conceptual frameworks, giving birth to her unique artistic style. With skillful brushstrokes, Shindo captures an ethereal essence reminiscent of lush, newly grown wool, infusing her creations with a captivating blend of softness and airy qualities. Her paintings exude a vibrant energy akin to organic vines, dynamically interweaving on the canvas to construct an inviting tableau that evokes a deep sense of warmth and joy, immersing viewers in a nostalgic journey through cherished memories.

Within Shindo's paintings, vague yet discernible figures of children gracefully emerge, originating from the ethereal ultrasound images captured during the artist's journey through motherhood. These enigmatic forms serve as a lens through which one can explore the delicate interplay of closeness and distance, symbolically encapsulating the profound imaginative space that bridges the child within the womb and the artist herself. Additionally, the depictions of herbivorous creatures like sheep, rabbits, and the maternal wolf in Shindo's body of work serve as poignant metaphors, embodying the inherent duality of fragility and resilience, fortitude and courage that characterizes the essence of new life.
