Jan Soumar was born in Prague, Czech Republic in 1995. He graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague in 2022 and participated in an exchange program at National Taipei University of the Arts in 2020. Soumar's work focuses on the unpredictable development of technology and the relationship between humans and technology. Similar themes can be observed in science fiction films, exploring the conflicts between AI technology and humanity.
Soumar creates his artworks using the panoramic mode of a photography app. He deliberately chooses not to conform to the app's instructions, such as disregarding the guiding lines, resulting in intriguing distortions. By adopting a non-cooperative approach to technology, the artist creates distorted and warped facial features and fragmented, scattered scenes, which are then detached and reassembled. Soumar has previously incorporated collage techniques, merging images and transferring them onto canvas with pigments. Currently, he utilizes the conventional elements of a deformation application to create unique forms of transformation.
