Butaoxi was born in Taipei and began her creative career in graphic design and illustration. She has worked on album covers and poster visuals for musicians such as Wei Li An, Bearbabes, Japanese Breakfast, and Bill Callahan, earning the Best Album Design award at the Singapore Freshmusic Awards in 2011. A serious leg injury in 2015 became a turning point, leading her to explore ceramics as a new creative medium. Since then, she has developed a practice rooted in emotion and intuition, embracing the unpredictability of clay, glaze, and firing processes.
Her works often carry a quiet, intimate tone, focusing on vulnerability and personal experience within urban life. Her signature series, Tears are Pearls, features bead-like ceramic forms arranged in poetic rhythms that convey a sense of tenderness and restraint. Through these delicate compositions, she explores how emotional lows and fragility can, in subtle ways, be transformed into moments of softness and light.
